Tested and Proven
Insect Shield technology results from years of intensive research and field study. Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of permethrin-treated clothing as an insect repellent. Insect Shield’s own testing methods follow United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines, and the results conclusively show that our unique, long-lasting insect protection works.
Durable
The repellency of Insect Shield apparel is EPA-registered to last through 70 launderings—the expected lifetime of a garment. This is also well beyond the life of most performance finishes commonly used in the technical-apparel industry. Our Affiliation with Insect Shield

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Permethrin safe?
Permethrin was created by copying a natural insect repellent compound found in Chrysanthemum plants. Simply put, permethrin is a safe and effective insect repellent that’s been used for many years. By emulating the benefits of this compound, chemists were able to make a synthetic version that’s both longer-lasting and more effective.
Permethrin has been proven to repel insects such as mosquitoes, ants, biting flies, fleas, chiggers, midges (no-see-ums) and ticks. This includes insects that may carry diseases such as Zika virus, Lyme disease, West Nile virus, and Malaria.
Permethrin has been EPA-registered for use on clothing since 1979, which helped it gain widespread use throughout the United States. It has even been used by the U.S. military for over 30 years and throughout public health and agricultural programs with a lot of success. More commonly, you’ll find permethrin in lice shampoo, flea dips for dogs, and permethrin-treated clothing and gear, using technology like Insect Shield. (Source: Insect Shield)
How does permethrin work?
The way permethrin works is by over-exciting an insect’s nervous system. When an insect encounters permethrin, it becomes paralyzed, and in this weakened state, the insect generally disengages, falls off, and frequently dies. (Source: Insect Shield)
How quickly does permethrin work?
Permethrin works quickly to affect insects, often immediately upon contact. This rapid effect makes permethrin an effective ingredient in insecticides and repellent products, helping provide protection against biting insects. (Source: Insect Shield)
What is Insect Shield?

Is permethrin-treated clothing and gear safe?
The advantages of Insect Shield permethrin-treated clothing are numerous. Unlike topical repellents, Insect Shield will not come off when you sweat, does not absorb into your skin, cannot be swallowed, is not harmful to eyes, and cannot be inhaled. There is no potential for overuse. The advantage is invisible, long-lasting, and a convenient insect protection that benefits the entire family. (Source: Insect Shield)
